Dr Howard C. Cutler runs a psychiatric practice in Phoenix, Arizona. He first met the Dalai Lama in 1982 while visiting India on a research grant to study Tibetan medicine. His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. He Has resided in exile in Dharamsala, India since 1959 when Chinese forces invaded Tibet. His tireless efforts on behalf of world peace and human rights have brought him international recognition, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
I really enjoyed this book. It is a highly accessible guide combining the Dalai Lama's eastern spiritual tradition with Dr Cutler's western perspective. However, I wouldn't agree with the Dalai Lama's perspective involving the combating of negative states of mind such as anger, hatred and greed. The way I see it we need to understand these so-called negative traits rather than combat them because one thing is for sure when we are in combat with something we have yet to understand it. With that said, this is an excellent book and I have nothing but the deepest of respect for both authors who have done an excellent job in delving into the complexities of human existence. Highly recommended reading.
